My article “Game changers” was published in the Sociological Review Magazine!
This short, open access article explores the connection (and essential differences) between games and play, and why breaking the “rules of the game” can helps us to see things differently.
Game changers: Can a return to playfulness help rewrite society’s rules?
Sociological Review Magazine, 25 March, 2025
“Being playful in a game world is hard. It requires us to acknowledge and embrace the absurd, and to keep embracing it.”
Me, 2025
Help me make it count
As many of you know, this year I’m raising funds for the Riley Orton Foundation to help hundreds of girls in rural Kenya access transformative STEM education.
I’m not paid anything for academic publishing. It’s all prestige — I’m just lucky enough to access a university education and the resources I need to write. But, for every piece I get published externally (that is, not this Substack) in 2025, I’ll post a call for donations to Riley Orton’s STEM program. (Donations will be collected and directly distributed through the Sunflower Foundation (Australia), enabling you to claim your donations on tax.)
Please will you sponsor this important work?
